Job Description:

Inspection & Diagnosis
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on heavy-duty vehicles and
equipment.
• Use diagnostic tools and computer systems to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and
electrical issues.
• Troubleshoot complex systems, including engines, transmissions, drivetrains,
hydraulics, and electronics.
Repair & Maintenance
• Repair or replace defective parts such as engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions,
and steering systems.
• Service diesel engines, fuel systems, and emission controls.
• Conduct welding, fabrication, and machining when necessary.
• Ensure repairs meet manufacturer and safety standards.
Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain accurate service records and repair logs.
• Prepare estimates of repair costs, parts, and labor.
• Communicate with supervisors, dispatchers, or customers regarding work performed
and future maintenance needs.

Types of Heavy Equipment Serviced
Heavy Duty Technicians are trained to work on a wide range of equipment, including but not
limited to: Bulldozers, Excavators, Articulated Dump Trucks, Wheel Loaders, Highway
Trucks, Crawler Cranes and other diesel-powered construction, mining, and transport
equipment.

Qualifications:

Qualifications & Skills
• Completion of a Heavy Equipment Technician or Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship
program (or equivalent experience).
• Journeyman certification is often required.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment, tools, and repair manuals.
• Knowledge of hydraulics, electronics, and computerized control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and schematics.
• Physical ability to lift heavy parts, work in varied conditions, and stand for extended
periods.
Education Requirements
• Technical Diploma or Apprenticeship Program in Heavy Equipment Technology,
Diesel Mechanics, or Mechanical Engineering (required).
• Journeyman Certificate or equivalent trade certification (preferred/required
depending on jurisdiction).
• Additional training in hydraulics, welding, and computerized diagnostic systems is an
advantage.
